Misdemeanors vs. Felonies

There are two types of criminal offenses in Connecticut— misdemeanors and felonies. Whether a crime is charged as a misdemeanor or a felony depends on the relevant statute and the circumstances of the alleged crime. Misdemeanors are generally the less serious crimes, punishable by imprisonment for no more than one year. Felonies are more serious, punishable by more than one year in jail or prison. Both misdemeanors and felonies are classified based on the severity of the crime and the minimum and maximum fines and imprisonment that may be imposed:

  • Capital felony: Life imprisonment
  • Class A felony: 25 to 60 years’ imprisonment and up to $20,000
  • Class A felony: 10 to 25 years and up to $20,000
  • Class B felony: One to 20 years and up to $15,000
  • Class C felony: One to 10 years and up to $10,000
  • Class D felony: One to five years and up to $5,000
  • Class A misdemeanor: Up to one-year imprisonment and $2,000
  • Class B misdemeanor: Up to six months and $1,000
  • Class C misdemeanor: Up to three months and $500

In addition, there are unclassified felonies and misdemeanors punishable by imprisonment as noted in the applicable statutes, but not designated under the listed classes.

Infractions and violations

Infractions and violations are not actually crimes, but instead violations of statutes, such as speeding or running a red light. There is no jail time for violations, and in most cases, the accused may pay a fine by mail or plead not guilty and have a hearing. In addition to misdemeanors & felonies in Connecticut, our attorneys also assist clients with traffic violations and defense at hearings.
